Origins of O'Herlihy

Forms of the original name were Ó Iarfhlatha and Ó Iarlaithe. The family may have been named after Jarlath, the patron saint of Tuam, County Galway. Iarlaithe was a chieftain whose territory was on the Limerick-Tipperary border. At some point, war with the O'Briens could have forced the O'Herlihys to flee into Cork. The family served the church of St. Gobnait's in Ballyvourney as erenaghs.

The name Herlihy was sometimes interchanged with Hurley in old records.
