Michael Hurley may have been the son of John Hurley and Jane McCarthy, who resided in Coolnagarrane. We aren't certain because Skibbereen baptism records do not go back far enough.
There is a John Hurley in Coolnagarrane in the Abbeystrowry Tithe Applotment land records from 1835. The only baptism record for a John Hurley, with a wife Jane McCarthy, is for a daughter Ellen. Ellen married John Sweeney in 1846 and lived in Lakelands (Kilnaclasha). There is some autosomal DNA evidence that might support this sibling relationship possibility.
Another possible sibling Mary married Jeremiah Driscoll before 1838 and lived in Skibbereen. There is also autosomal DNA evidence that might support this sibling relationship possibility.
No evidence has turned up showing that three of Michael's and Bridget's children survived through the famine. There might be evidence a fourth survived and the one known survivor is listed below. Bridget Cahalane the matriarch probably died around the end of the famine. The family came close to getting evicted around 1850. Michael's name also showed up in the Landed Estates Court Rentals as a Coolnagarrane tenant in 1851.
One Daniel Hurley, very likely Michael's brother, married immediately after the famine. Daniel's family was considerably more prolific. So far, present day direct male descendants have not been found. However, there is a considerable amount of autosomal DNA evidence supporting the possiblity that Daniel was a sibling to Michael.
Daniel (1901-1962 d. Bandon)* was acquainted with B. Fitzsimmons at the Southern Star. Daniel told the writer of a distant Coolnagarrane relative named Margaret Hurley who married George Terrett, a policeman, and ran a pub in Drimoleague for many years. However, genealogical records have not been found to make that link to Coolnagarrane. The one Terrett child died young, so this research line is a dead end.
